Sequencing: Theories of Motivation

James-Lange Theory follows William James’ (1890/1950) and Carl Lange’s (1922) theory that emotion occurs after environmental stimuli productive of a physiological reaction (Daffin, 2021, p. 2-30).

Cannon-Bard Theory follows Cannon’s (1927; 1932) and Bard’s theories such that emotions have specific physiologies and that physiological responses and emotion are simultaneous (Daffin, 2021, p. 2-31).

Schachter-Singer Two Factor Theory proposes that assessment of physiological response involves cognitive appraisal of situation to identify emotion (Daffin, 2021, pp. 2-21–2-22).
