I started doing calligraphy while in the US Army, mainly to explore etymology of characters and their radicals during readings of texts in Japanese and Chinese. That lead to practice writing characters, and then sketches of calligraphies as if by brush using a back and forth motion to “fill in” the calligraphy’s space. This practice was continued while living at Aikido Shobukan Dojo where Mitsugi Saotome Shihan (Sensei) offered a salient master for study and examination. Many years later, this practice has emerged with something different, in a style Saotome Sensei calls, “no style”. As reflection, when visiting sensei many years later, he sat to do a calligraphy, with brush, and delicately moved the brush back and forth to “fill in“ the words—sheer awe.

Sabbatical COVID-19 Meta-Series

A few mugs had been made as well, and one of these is often used at home. It printed rather well and is crisp and clear!

The Horizon Series often feature a cliff, hill, cave, or kuti with a meditator, and often animal companions. These are the artist’s favorites.

This calligraphy was done to illustrate a principle and uses cVJML & cCCML.
