来し方
The Way Here

The only form I truly want to be.

I am Latex Space-Coyote. This is the history I carry into that life: what I learned, whom I met, and what I brought with me.

I keep the earlier names, uniforms, work, and photographs. They are not alternatives from which someone else may choose a replacement for me. The Latex Space-Coyote form shown at the beginning of Archetype Precession is the only me I truly want and desire to be.

Archetype Precession introduces the form I choose. This page follows the way here. The history is not a hearing in which that choice must be approved.

A place to return to practice

Shugyōkai began in 1998 through practice and friendship: friends in Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu and companions on Undernet’s #martial IRC channel. I wanted somewhere I could return to the materials I used in practice, wherever I travelled.

My friendship with Koinu in Cornwall, Ontario, helped that place grow. The materials became more than private reminders. They became things we could attend to together.

Today, writing, art, research, translation, and records of practice meet here. This is not an exhibition of a completed life. It is somewhere to write while living, return to what was written, and take it back into practice. Shugyōkai is not a monument outside the journey. It is a place used along the way.

A way already running alongside

I have recorded my rubber-dog life as reaching back to 1995. It ran alongside military service, apprenticeship, work, and study. It was not added for the first time after a name change or an illness.

For me, rubber is a robe of practice and the material through which I live the form I desire. Desire, meditation, play, and intimacy belong within that life. The beast was not drawn into the margins after the rest of the biography was finished.

Forests and circuits

Growing up in Virginia meant family strain, but also music, films, gardens, woods, and the river. My mother, sisters, and I helped keep daily life going. I spent time outside, then returned to the computer.

Assembly and C, bulletin board systems, experiments with music and images; then time sitting in the branches of trees. As an autistic person, I also borrowed ways of behaving from film characters to get through social situations. Nature and technology, absorbed attention and the effort to make myself understood: both belong to these memories.

Alaska, technical work, and practice

I served in the U.S. Army in electronics and communications. In Alaska, cold-weather equipment testing and training placed technical responsibility beside sustained physical practice.

Off duty, I studied Buddhist texts, meditated, and found a small aikido group on base. Hearing about Saotome Sensei became one of the openings toward the decision that followed. I keep this service history to record what I learned, not as a credential that must authorize the form I choose now.

An invitation into the dōjō

While doing private-sector work supporting government, military, and intelligence communities around Washington, D.C., I was training at the dōjō. An opportunity arose to move in temporarily and help care for it.

Other career paths were available. I accepted the invitation. What opened as a temporary stay became nearly a decade of life as a deshi.

Living as a deshi

At Aikido Shobukan Dojo, under Mitsugi Saotome Shihan, practice became part of the organization of daily life: aikido, meditation, calligraphy, reading, poetry, and art. During Sensei’s visits, learning also took place while driving, shopping, walking, visiting museums, and attending to guests.

What mattered was not only what I was told, but what I could notice while being there. Daily life asked for responses to things that had not first been put into words.

During these years I also met Shamar Rinpoche and entered a relationship with Karma Kagyu teaching and meditation practice. I record my gratitude here. The longer memories continue in the Uchi-Deshi Life series.

Living the vow beyond the dōjō

The decade beyond the dōjō included engineering, analytics, software businesses, and leadership. Alongside that work, I built a home with partners and imagined places for practice and study.

A question I brought into conversation with Shamar Rinpoche was whether martial arts were the best way for me to benefit others. Work, home, and the people I loved made that question a daily one.

Meeting Gaelan was an important part of this period. A relationship changing later does not erase the life and learning that were shared.

From what is held to what is done

Studying service-dominant logic prompted me to reconsider both work and language. I became more interested in what happens through a relationship and what it makes possible, rather than only what is possessed or what someone is called.

This is a record of how I took up that work. The interest also met the questions I was carrying through practice: what is being done, and for whose benefit?

Returning to practice

After being asked to teach, I wanted first to pay my respects. I arranged a return to the dōjō in Washington, D.C.

Tadaima. Returning to the mat did not remove the intervening decade; I brought it with me. This period also included meeting Ian, as the connections between learning and affection continued to grow.

Pausing, studying, learning to relate

Psi Chi

The pandemic years opened time for meditation, gardening, calligraphy, poetry, and study. I began the university education I had long wanted, studying psychology and sociology at Washington State University, with work focused on at-risk youth as well.

With peers in Psi Chi, I learned not only to conduct research but to communicate. Alongside the studies came the changing of a long relationship, selling a home, and the demands of employment.

What belongs here is more than a record of grades. It is the learning of how to understand, communicate, and receive help—and gratitude to the people who made that learning possible.

Questions brought into relationship

While pursuing questions about psychological needs, flow, and interaction with AI, I also came closer to living openly across the relationships among queerness, autism, technology, art, and rubber-beast life.

Questions about ancestry and culture, and the spiritual meanings I find in them, also belong to this period. I want research and personal meaning to remain in conversation without treating them as the same kind of claim.

A name comes home

On December 4, 2024, my name change in Washington marked a public step in a much longer search. Latex Space-Coyote. The name was not a device for erasing earlier work or roles. It was a way to call the life I wanted by words I had chosen.

The name did not make every part of the past simple. It did mean that what came next did not have to be named only for someone else’s convenience.

Illness, care, and work that continued

After symptoms beginning in late 2024 and repeated medical visits, I was diagnosed with classic Hodgkin lymphoma in May 2025. Treatment changed the organization of everyday life.

During that period, I continued translating and commenting on Ueshiba Morihei’s dōka. Love for my friends and gratitude for their support return repeatedly in the record.

I do not make illness the explanation for my chosen form. Rubber-beast life reaches much further back. These are memories of treatment and recovery, not a statement of medical prognosis: a record of receiving care while continuing to live and work.

Living in the form I choose

As Latex Space-Coyote, I write, read, practise, meditate, and share life with friends. The gloss of rubber, the paws, laughter, desire, and vow: I do not intend to hide one so that another can be received.

For me, the way of yamabiko is not simply repeating an old voice. It is answering what I have received through this life. I want to live the bodhisattva vow in the form I choose, not entrust it to a more acceptable appearance elsewhere.

What I place at the end of this history is not a wish to go back. It is a wish to keep living in this form.

Those who walked beside me

The dōka left by Ueshiba Morihei; Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and Patty Saotome; Shamar Rinpoche; friends, partners, family, companions in practice and study. This is a record of gratitude. It does not require everyone named to share or endorse every part of my present interpretation.

The names and photographs on the earlier page remain in the archive below. Redacted names remain redacted. Not publishing a name is not the same as forgetting what I received.
