Relates to “reinvigorat[ing] the withered soul by shaking a ritual object or, alternatively, the human body itself” and/or calling a spirit into the body (Tsushiro, n.d.). Regarding shaking ritual objects, see the Hifumi Norito and shaking of the treasures as illuminated in Shinto (Tsushiro, 1990). Tsushiro (n.d.) notes that furitama (i.e., tamafuru) relates to 殖ゆ (“to reproduce”, “to multiply”) and 賜ふる (“to bestow”).
